Okay, so don't get me wrong, I'm a summer gal, no doubt! But theres just something about winter that I love too, even though I can't stand being cold.. So because I live in a different hemisphere to most of the readers, I thought that now would be the perfect time to do this post. It is supposedly just the beginning of Autumn (Fall) here so shouldn't be cold, but something has gone seriously wrong then, because I am on holiday in Plett at the moment and it is freezing! I am so cold, it is pouring with rain, super windy and the seas are very rough- typical winter conditions. So over the past week I have had to switch into "winter mode"- drinking hot chocolate, wearing loads of layers and it made me think about the ten things that I love about winter.
SNUGGLING UNDER THE COVERS AND READING
I love being so warm and comfy when it is cold out. There is something so comforting to me where I am snuggled down into my layers of blankets and duvets and it is freezing and raining outside.
LAYING IN BED WITH A MUG OF HOT CHOCOLATE
I very rarely drink hot chocolate in summer, in fact, the only time I really
drink it is when I am cold, in winter usually. Making myself a mug of delicious hot chocolate with marshmallows and everything and crawling into bed- nothing sounds better.
WEARING MY UGG BOOTS
I know that Uggs are pretty much internationally shunned fashion wise, but I absolutely love them. I love mine to bits and I can only ever wear them in the midst of cold cold winter.
FALLING ASLEEP TO THE SOUND OF RAIN FALLING ON MY ROOF
Our roof is kind of flat, I don't know how to describe it, but it is flat-ish and made of corrugated metal (rather than something like slate) and so when rain falls on it, its really loud. But growing up with this sound of rain pounding on the roof as I lay in bed trying to fall asleep, it has actually become comforting and something that I love.
MY ELECTRIC BLANKET
Up to about 2 years ago, I refused to allow my mom to buy me one because I didn't like the idea of sleeping on electricity- and quite frankly, I thought it was unnecessary and an indulgence in a privileged lifestyle. But I must admit that I love it. We write our big mid year exams in the middle of winter and so one of my best memories is, after working for hours at my desk, climbing into my super warm bed that has been preheated for a few hours by my electric blanket.
Warm winter clothes |
THE CRACKLING OF WOOD IN OUR FIRE PLACE
We have a corner wood fire place. I love the sound of wood crackling on it, especially when I am falling asleep.
WINTER CLOTHES
I love summer clothes too, but I love being able to wear boots (ankle, Uggs, wedged, doc martins- you name it!), scarves (I love love scarves), long pants, hoodies, blazers, coats, gloves and tights.
HOT BATHS
It is so nice to climb into a really hot bubble bath when it is freezing cold outside. Throw in a Lush bomb and that's all I need to get me through the Winter hehe.
THUNDERSTORMS
We don't get many thunderstorms, which is why when we do, I find them pretty exciting. I love seeing an occasional flash of lighting or hearing the rumble of thunder!
LOTS OF BLANKETS
In winter, my bed has about 5 blankets on it and I literally sleep with them all on I love being all snug and warm inside.
PUDDLES
Due to so much rain in winter, there are always puddles. There is a dip in the land level of our street and so it always fills up with water and forms a massive puddle. In winter, every time we drive down our street home, we go through it and it splashes all over the windscreen. Yes, this sounds a bit stupid, guess it's the inner-child in me talking.
All I need on a rainy days! |
On really miserable days, I could literally spend the entire day laying on the couch watching movies and all my favourite series with a cup of tea, blankets and the fire crackling in the corner.
BLASTING WARM AIR FROM THE CAR RADIATOR ONTO MY FEET
Our school shoes have little cut out holes on the top, which are terribly designed for winter because water from the rain gets through and soaks our tights and socks- making our feet freezing for the entire day. One of the things that I always do is, when I climb into the car after school, blast the heat directed at my cold feet, to war them up. Just an odd little nostalgic thing I guess.
THE SOUND OF WIND GOING ROUND YOUR HOUSE
I didn't know how to describe this but I am sure you know what I mean. Like that howling sound where the wind whips around a corner, I love it. Especially if I am warm and snug in bed.
